  • Tournament Requirements

    1. We are trying to train all tournament directors to turn in draw sheets complete with scores and a list of players with birth dates and contact information as soon as possible after each tournament. You may wonder why that is necessary and I'll try to give a brief explanation of why we would like that information.

    2. The reason we need player information is that we often have players with similar names and it is occurring more often as the sport grows. Without some identifying information on a player, it is often very difficult to be sure we are applying points to the correct player. That problem is compounded when the same player has his name misspelled in a couple of tournaments. With contact information, it is possible to phone or email the player and make sure we have the correct player and the correct spelling. Unfortunately we still have quite a few player records with first and last names only.

    3. The draw sheets are also necessary in trying to decide what ratings a player should have, and if we should move their rating up or down at the end of a years play. Also a draw sheet with scores is much more useful in trying to judge the strength of different teams than just knowing who won a match. If for example a team wins 3 tournaments in the 4.0 division, it would appear that they may be too strong for the 4.0's. If the draw sheets show that they won every match quite easily and never lost a game, they might need to be moved up immediately. If, however, they lost several games and had several very close matches, then they are probably in the correct division even though they won. Without scores and draw sheets this is impossible to determine. It is not an easy task even when complete results are available.

    4. It would also be nice in the future to track match results and scores for all players. This would enable us to base rankings not only on points but also to consider good wins or bad losses in determining the top players in each divisions. This will not happen until we get compliance from all tournament directors and also have more volunteers to help with entering the necessary data if it were available.
